Reading a Landscape Quote Beyond the Total Price: Making Priorities Visible

By @rgalmanzalandscapenotes

❦

Read a landscape quote by checking the proposed work before comparing its total with another proposal. The descriptions need to be comparable for the price difference to mean much.

Match the proposal to the area discussed

Check which part of the property each item concerns. Ask how materials or planting choices will be identified and how any undecided items are handled. If one quote describes work that another omits, clarify that difference instead of assuming it is included somewhere else.

Clarify the work around the main task

Discuss access, preparation, removal of existing material and the condition in which landscape consultation preparation the area will be left. Ask which responsibilities belong to you and which are part of the proposal. Keep written clarifications with the quote and request an updated description if the scope changes. A clear comparison should help you understand the work being offered, not merely place two totals beside one another.

Keep the next decision clear

Keep the practical arrangements close to the design notes. Access, retained features and later care can affect how the proposal is understood, even when they do not form its main illustration.
